Gray poodle's growth diary: squeezing anal glands

Anal gland problems

What are anal glands?

Anal gland refers to the fluid in the dog's anus. If the anal gland is not squeezed for a long time, it will deteriorate and stimulate the inner wall of the anus to become inflamed, causing the dog to grind on the ground with its buttocks, resulting in inflammation and other symptoms. The anal sac is two glands located next to the dog's anus. These two glands are located at four o'clock and eight o'clock under the anus respectively. Anal glands secrete anal gland fluid, which is a very smelly fluid with different smells and colors. The main source of the dog's odor is the anal gland.

Frequency of Anal Gland Cleaning

In order to prevent the occurrence of anal gland inflammation, the anal gland should be cleaned once a week or two. Squeezing your anal glands too often is not good for your dog's health, and sometimes it doesn't squeeze out secretion, so just be aware that it needs to be cleaned regularly. Anal gland fluid is usually not discharged on its own, so the efforts of the shoveling officer are needed to keep the dog healthy. If you accidentally hurt your dog when squeezing the anal gland, causing inflammation, you should go to the hospital as soon as possible and diminish inflammation and swelling.

Dogs with symptoms that require cleaning of anal glands

1. Rub your hips on the floor

2. Bite the buttocks
3. Turn around and bite the tail
4. Touching their buttocks is very sensitive.
5. Pull your tail instead of sticking it up high, sometimes with your tail between your legs.

Preparations for cleaning anal glands

First of all, prepare the cleaning tools. Some shoveling officers like to use gloves. I prefer to use dog wipes, which are mild and safe. The electric push knife is to better clean hair near the dog's anus and prevent the anal gland dirt from sticking to the hair. I use the Baorun model, which is adjusted to a length of 1 cm and shaved outward along the anus, which is very convenient to operate.

Step of cleaning anal glands

Step 1: Choose the right time to clean anal glands. I usually dry the grizzly's hair, especially the hair near the buttocks, after the grizzly's bath. This step is to prepare for a better follow-up observation of whether the anal glands need to be cleaned.

Step 2: There is a very important point here to settle the grizzly bear in a suitable position! Is to keep the grizzly bear's ass at a safe distance from the shoveling officer! Remember! Then fix the grizzly bear's body, taking into account her comfort. Lifting the grizzly bear's tail and rolling it up to expose her anus, I asked my mother for help.

Step 3: Shave the hair near the anus with an electric knife and find the anal glands (near the anus at four and eight o'clock). Check to see if the anal glands are full. If the glands are full, press inward on the underside of the anus and feel a slight bulge.

Step 4: If the anal glands are found to be full, gently squeeze and absorb the stagnant liquid and pasty secretion with wet wipes. Be gentle, and be careful to consult your veterinarian if you notice white or bloody fluid coming out of your dog's anus to see if it's blocked or infected; grizzly anal gland fluid is yellow and smelly, and I'm sure other dogs are the same, so be prepared.

Step 5: This process is repeated until the anal gland is empty. Be gentle and comfortable for the grizzly bear.

If you still have doubts, you can watch the video below, which is more intuitive. Actually squeezes the anal gland is a practice makes perfect work, grasps the strength, can be very simple. Squeeze out the dirt because I later cut the grizzly bear's little face, forgot to keep it (Mommy threw it away) and couldn't paste it up, which was a little bit of privacy for the grizzly bear.
