Anemia in dogs in stages

Dogs are most likely to be anemic at the age of 2-3 months

(1) Dietary reasons

Anemia in puppies around 2 months of age is mostly caused by food that can not keep up with the growth rate.

At 6-12 weeks of age, dogs grow very fast, and at 8 weeks of age, they can weigh 4-5 times as much as they were born. More iron supplements are needed during rapid growth, but the puppy's own iron reserves are very low, and at this time the puppy begins to wean, milk intake decreases, if the complementary food (dog food) intake is not enough, or the iron content in the food is too low, iron deficiency anemia is prone to occur.

(2) Inadequate deworming

Two-month-old puppies usually have a large number of parasites inside and outside the body, if the deworming is not in place, roundworms in the dog's stomach to seize nutrients, fleas, lice in the dog's skin to suck blood. No matter how much the dog eats, it will be anemic.

Experts warn that most of the dogs purchased in the pet market are not dewormed.

(3) Poor gastrointestinal absorption

Many puppies leave their mothers for new homes at the age of about 2 months. During this period, dogs will experience changes of environment, owners and food, and many of them will have diarrhea and soft stools. Even if the dog eats well, the stomach will not absorb well, and the nutrition will be lacking.

Dietary therapy to improve anemia

1. Supplement iron to enrich the blood quickly

Anemia in dogs is usually due to iron deficiency. Supplementing iron-containing nutrients is the fastest way to enrich the blood.

2. Supplement trace elements and vitamins

In addition to iron, copper and zinc, vitamin B12 and vitamin K can improve nutritional anemia.

Experts warn that most blood-enriching nutrients also contain these substances and do not need to be supplemented separately. But if parents are feeding iron alone, they should take extra supplements.

3. Increase protein intake

Anemia is a lack of red blood cells, and hemoglobin needs protein to synthesize, so it's important to increase protein intake for dogs.

Dog food should be based on beef and mutton formula, which is rich in iron, protein, zinc, niacin, vitamin B12 and so on, and has better blood tonic effect. Dogs can also be fed cooked beef and mutton at ordinary times.
